ABOUT

Welcome to a world of sounds

There are no noises, there are only sounds, said Pierre Henry (1927-2017), famous French composer and one of the creators of the musical movement called "musique concrète". Whether in all its simplicity or complexity, sound immerses us in everyday life. Silence itself does not exist, except in space where the sound wave cannot propagate.

JÖRÐ SOUNDSCAPES wants to be one of the vectors of the waves and vibrations of this world that surrounds us, in a quest for the rare, unique sound, the one that can only be perceived in a precise place, at a given moment. A forest silence will never be the same between the trees of Öskjuhlíð in Iceland and those of Rovaniemi in Finland.
A raindrop that lands on the ground of a Norwegian tundra has a very different resonance than if it had hit the facade of a building in downtown Tokyo.

Winds, thunder, a stream... There are as many examples as there are transmitters.

So it becomes important to travel with a recorder in order to capture these singular moments. A sound is worth a thousand pictures, but a thousand pictures are not worth a sound.

"jörð" ("earth" in old Icelandic), it is the personification of earth and a goddess in Norse mythology. She is the mother of the thunder god Thor and a sexual partner of Odin (wikipedia).
It is a perfect name for a sound library. This Nordic Gaïa perfectly sums up the sound ambiences you can find here.

This blog echoes the youtube channel of the same name and you will find much more detailed information on each sound that has been posted. Because it is important to recontextualize each recording in order to appreciate its full flavor. And showing the other side of the story is also an opportunity to share with you this passion for sounds in a much more human way.

Trust VEGVÍSIR to guide you through these soundscapes.
The journey has just begun.
